The beauty cannot be compared to anything that exists in the world. During the trek, walk through lush green meadows, get panorama views of the mountains and explore the aqua-green alpine lakes. Every day on this track is excellent. The Great Lakes of Kashmir is one of the most beautiful treks in India. 

The best time to trek the Kashmir Great Lakes

The Kashmir great lakes trek  is the best choice for those who are very interested in mountaineering. This moderate trek is very amazing.

The best perfect time to conduct the trek is from June to September. The month of June is the most beautiful, colorful flowering green meadow with plenty of snow, which makes your track unforgettable.

During the day the temperature here is around 05 ° C to 18 C and at night the temperature drops between 03 C to 08 C which is very pleasant.

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek Itinerary
Day 01: Reach at Srinagar and transfer to Shitkadi via Sonamarg Village
  • Total Distance – 112 km – 4/5 Hours journey
  • Mode of Journey – By taxi
  • Altitude – Shitkadi camp – 7780 feet 
  • Night stay – Camp – on twin share basis

On arrival at Srinagar your team leader will meet you and assist you to reach Shitkadi. Shitkadi is only 7 km away from Sonamarg, and the trek starts from there. It will take around 4 hours to reach the base camp. Overnight stay in camp.

Day 02: Shitkadi camp to Nichnai Camp Trek
  • Trek Distance – 11 km – 6/7 Hours Trek
  • Mode of Journey – On foot
  • Altitude – Nichnai – 11888 feet
  • Night Stay – Camp – on twin share basis

You can clearly see the entire city of Sonamarg. Reach to the top, now your trek route goes through a dense Maple forest.

Reach Shekdur, it is a meadow of silver birch trees, take some rest here, after lunch set off for Nichnai.

Now start descending alongwith this beautiful trail it leads to the beginning of Nichnai River valley. Continue walking along the right bank of the river and enter a beautiful immense valley surrounded by mountains.

The river divides the valley into two parts, trek for 30 minutes and then come to the wider part amongst mountain ranges. Set up your camp in a suitable area, spend your night in this beautiful environment.

Day 03: Nichnai camp to Vishnusar Lake Trek
  • Trek Distance – 13 km – 6/7 Hours Trek
  • Mode of Journey – On foot
  • Altitude – Vishnusar – 12055 feet
  • Night Stay – Camp – on twin share basis

Today you will trek through the meadows and witness the change in landscapes. We’ll start after breakfast, and first you have to cross the Nichnai Pass, a short distance away.

Walk along the river and then go to the left bank, follow it for an hour and the trail will go up through the meadow. After walking for about an hour through the grassland you will reach Lake Vishnusar, this is where the Meadows end.

After some more trekking, you will reach a huge waterfall on the left, it has merged into the river flowing through the meadows.

Walk on the grassy carpet in the flat grassland and between the two mountain ranges. Reach the end and come across a stream, it originates from Vishnusar Lake.

The lake is not even visible from the camp site, set up your camp and now if you wish, you can go and visit Twin Lake. Vishnusar Lake is about 0.5 km away from your camp and you can reach there in 10 minutes.

Day 04: Vishnusar Lake to Gadsar Lake Trek
  • Trek Distance – 16 km – 7/8 Hours Trek
  • Mode of Journey – On foot
  • Altitude – Gadsar Lake – 13850 feet
  • Night Stay – Camp – on twin share basis

Start your trek after breakfast, half an hour later you will reach Ridge Top (Gadsar Pass) and the views of twin Lake Vishnusar and Krishnasar together are glamorous.

On the other side of Gadsar Pass is a wide valley with a small lake and you can see the snow covered mountains standing on the horizon.

Head down the valley and the first lake visible is Yamsar Lake, trek for an hour and reach the plains. The valley has become narrow and the colorful flowers look impressive, now you are near Gadsar.

It is one of the most beautiful and heavenly lakes on this track, with blue flowers blooming on the side and snow slides from the hills to the lake.

Some people have camped at Gadsar but we will follow the path down for half an hour and another valley will open and a blue lake to its left.

Then comes Gadsar’s army camp, which requires permission from the camp’s headquarters to go further and takes 2-3 hours to get the permit. ID proofs, team and tracker details are examined.

Day 5: Gadsar Lake to Satsar Lake Trek

  • Altitude – Satsar Lake – 12100 feet
  • Night Stay – Camp – on twin share basis

Today Morning after breakfast, start your hiking. Cross a stream and start ascending, leaving the lines of the tree down, you will go up to the top, you can still see the trees and the river. The higher you go, the higher the altitude will be achieved, do not stop here, keep hiking, you will exit the river valley.

There is a landscape that looks fascinating with hills in front, to your right side, there is a flat land, surrounded with a small ridge, through which a stream flows.

You can set up camp here, if you are in Gadsar Lake last night, but if you camped near army camp last night, Satsar Lake would be the best option for today.

Satsar Lakes is a combination of  7 Lakes. The name Sat Sar means “The 7 Lakes”. You can be found water in 4-5 lakes of them but it depends on the season. There is an Army check post in Satsar, all the original id proofs and every details will be checked here again. The lake is large with Mountain View in front, here you can choose a suitable place to camp.

Day 6: Satsar Lake to Gangabal Camp Trek

  • Trek Distance   – 09 km – 5/6 Hours Trek
  • Mode of Journey – On foot
  • Altitude – Gangabal – 11655 feet
  • Night Stay – Camp – on twin share basis

Today you have to ascend and descends several times, you have to trek for around half an hour to reach the last and biggest lake of the 7 lakes of Satsar. f

You will find various small and big boulders on this route, after spending some time at the last lake start descending, after about 30 munities of walk you will touch the forest line. There is a ridge on the right. You have to climb to the top of a ridge, get some rest and now you have two more mountains to cross.

After two hours of climbing you will arrive at the third peak, its height is 13,400 feet. The views from here are amazing, you will see two lakes on one side.

At a distance two clear blue lakes are visible, the smallest lakes is Nand kol, and the biggest one is Gangabal.

We will go to the Nandkol Lake. First. We will camp besides this lake, there are many places to camp.

This lake is located at the base of Harmukh peak. Gangabal Lake is a 20 minute walk from Nanda Kol Lake, a stream flows to the right connecting the two lakes. 

You have to cross a bridge to cross this stream, follow the stream to reach Gangabal Lake.

Day 07: Gangabal to Naranag Road Trek and Drive to Srinagar

Today may be the hardest part of your trek, because you have to descend straight to the Naranag Road.

Start your trek through the meadows and pine forest. Arrive at the village and then you take the main road of Naranag to start your drive to reach Srinagar. You will reach at Srinagar at 6:30 – 7:00 pm.

The trek ends with sweet memories.

🎒 Things To Take

Mandatory Documents:
  •  Original and photocopy of government photo identity card- (Aadhar Card, Driving License, Voters ID, etc,)
  •  Passport and Visa important to foreigners
  •  Medical Certificate (First part should be filled by the Doctor and Second part by the Trekker)
  • Declaration Certificates
Necessary Items for Trekkers:
  • Backpack (50 to 60 liters)

A strongly built backpack with good support is compulsory for a trek. (Rain cover is important)

  • Sturdy Trekking Shoes

The shoes should be strong enough with good support. The people ask if sports shoes would be comfortable but it is good to bring the right trekking shoes.

  • Trek Pants

The jeans are never suitable for a trek so you need at least 2-3 trek pants for treks carry more for longer treks.

  • Jacket

Jackets are very important to carry on a trek it protects you against the chilly weather. So carry 2 jackets on a week long trek.

  • Layers of warm Clothing

Carry warm woolen layers or fleece. Carry more layers during winter season (at least 2 to 3) and less during summer.

  • Thermals

The Temperature decreases at night so you might be need thermals for Night.
